Breast Imaging Screenings in Salida, CO
Early Detection Is Possible with 3D Breast Cancer Screenings
Mammograms are one of the most effective tools available to diagnose breast cancer. While a mammogram cannot prevent cancer, it can detect early indicators of the disease, allowing doctors to start treatment as soon as possible. Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center offers 3D digital mammography in Salida, serving the communities of Buena Vista, Westcliffe, Saguache, and Fairplay.
Our imaging technologists live and work in the communities they serve. This personal connection, paired with advanced imaging technology ensures you receive exceptional, patient-centered care close to home.
How Does 3D Mammography Work?
We are equipped with 3D digital mammography, also known as tomosynthesis, which obtains highly detailed images of breast tissue. Unlike a standard 2D mammogram, the 3D system captures a series of thin “slices” of X-ray images of the breast tissue from multiple angles, then rebuilds them into a three-dimensional visual your radiologist reviews layer by layer.
This layered view gives your radiologist a clearer picture of overlapping breast tissue, which is most important for those with dense breast tissue. On a standard 2D mammogram, dense tissue can obscure or mimic an abnormality because every layer of tissue is compressed into a single, flat image. Because tomosynthesis separates those layers, your radiologist has a better chance of identifying or ruling out potential concerns.
What Your Mammogram Screens For
Every image gives your radiologist specific details to track, especially when compared to any previous screenings. Below are common indicators they will look for:
- Calcifications: Small mineral deposits in breast tissue. Larger deposits are common in women over 50 and typically not a concern, though a cluster of smaller specks gets a closer look.
- Cysts: Fluid-filled sacs that can feel like a lump but are not cancerous. Your mammogram helps your radiologist tell the difference between a cyst and a solid mass.
- Tumors: Abnormal growths that are not always cancerous, though any new or quickly developing growth gets examined promptly.
